• Mabilog to call DOJ probe of BJMP killings in city jail

ILOILO CITY: Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog will ask the Department of Justice (DOJ) to conduct an investigation on the deaths of inmates at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) district jail at Barangay Ungca, Jaro in this city allegedly related to the illegal drug trade inside the correction center. Two inmates were reported to have committed suicide while inside the BJMP city district jail, but their families claimed they were killed because of the proliferation of illegal drugs inside the jail. One inmate even told his family of his failure to pay for drug arrears before he was killed. Mabilog said the BJMP facility in Ungca is under the supervision and control of the DOJ and the city government only partners with the BJMP on certain programs but not cannot undertake its own investigation. There were reports on the existence of rampant drug dealings inside the jail and drug pushers continue the nefarious trade with connivance of other inmates and perhaps jailguards.
