National Theatre Live, in association with the British Embassy in Manila and SM Aura Premier Cinema held a special screening of William Shakespeare’s play Macbeth on October 22 at the SM Aura Premier Cinema 2—a first in Philippine Entertainment.
National Theatre Live is an initiative by the National Theatre to broadcast live performances onto cinema screens around the world. Since its first season, which began in June 2009 with the acclaimed production of Phédre starring Helen Mirren, over 1.75 million people have now experienced the work of National Theatre Live in cinemas worldwide.
Macbeth is a production of the prestigious Manchester International Festival. It stars Kenneth Branagh, (Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, My Week With Marilyn, Hamlet) in his first Shakespeare performance in over a decade as Macbeth, and Alex Kingston (Doctor Who, ER) as Lady Macbeth. The supporting cast is comprised of members of the Royal Shakespeare Company previously.
Directed by Rob Ashford and Branagh himself, this electrifying new production of Shakespeare’s tragic tale of ambition and treachery unfolds within the walls of an intimate deconsecrated Manchester church.
The special screening was part of the British Embassy’s ongoing “This is GREAT Britain” campaign—a five-month festival celebrating all that is best about Great Britain and its partnership with the Philippines.
The British Embassy in partnership with SM Cinema, the British Chamber of Commerce in the Philippines and the British Alumni Association is proud to have welcomed the world renowned National Theatre from their home on London’s south bank to the Philippines for the first time.
