COTABATO CITY: Maguindanao Governor Esmael “Toto” Mangudadatu sent separate teams of volunteers to distribute relief goods in various evacuation centers for more than 32,000 families displaced by floods in 158 villages of 20 of Maguindanao’s 36 towns, instead of receiving gifts from visitors and guests, during his 45th birthday celebration on Thursday. The displacement, which prompted a declaration of provincial state of calamity, has been compounded by evacuation of other villagers from separate incidents of armed clashes between brigand Moro rebels and government forces and bombing attacks in the province. Maguindanao, which literally means the “land of flooded plains,” is a host to separate enclaves of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, the Moro National Liberation Front and the recalcitrant Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters.
