KIDAPAWAN CITY: Unidentified gunmen on Monday shot dead an election officer in Matalam, North Cotabato, authority said on Wednesday.
Matalam police chief Sr. Insp. Elias Coloma identified the victim as Ted Monteverde Cespon, 56, who was on board a multi-cab when was shot by motorcyle-riding gunmen in Barangay Manubuan.
Investigation showed that the gunmen chased the multi-cab, ordered the driver to pull over and shot Cespon with a .45 caliber pistol.
Witnesses told the police that Cespon, an assistant election officer of Parang town in Maguindanao, did not know he was the target of the killers.
“The suspects immediately approached him and shot him with their handguns,” said Coloma.
Coloma said Cespon has been receiving “death threats” through his mobile phone from unknown senders prior to the incident.
He said they will ask Cespon’s relatives in Parang about the real motive of the killing and possibly to get identities of the suspects.
“There are indications that it could possibly be work-related. We’re not making conclusions this early. We have to let investigators finish their job of unearthing the real circumstances that led to the murder of Mr. Cespon,” Coloma concluded.
