The Gothia Cup 2017 international youth football tournament kicks off on Monday with its opening ceremony at the Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg, Sweden.
All 77 participating nations, including the Philippines, will be presented in the two-hour festivities that will be accompanied with music and fireworks display.
Makati Football Club, which won in the 1985 edition of Gothia Cup, will represent the Philippines in the Boys 13, Boys 12 and Boys 11 categories of the tourney slated to conclude on July 22.
Makati FC will duke it out against 128 teams from 27 countries for the Boys 13 championship as it begins its campaign in Group 3.
In the 42-group, 174-team Boys 12 division, the Filipino club will field two squads, which are set to play in Groups 1 and 28.
Meanwhile, the Boys 11 representative will compete in Group 1 out of the 32 groups pitting 138 teams from 27 nations.
Last year, Makati FC’s Boys 12 team seized the third place trophy in the annual event, which is participated by around 1,700 teams from 80 countries each year.
