MAKATI City Mayor Jejomar Erwin Binay Jr. on Monday vowed to stand against what he described as abuse of authority of some senators.
He said he will allow himself to be detained at the Senate.

“Masakit man para sa akin ang naging desisyon ng Senate blue ribbon committee, nararapat lamang na ipaglaban ang tamang prinsipyo at katarungan upang ihinto ang pagmamalabis ng kapangyarihan ng ilang mga senador [The decision of the Senate blue ribbon committee hurts but it is just right for me to fight for my principles and for justice so the abuses of some senators will stop],” Binay pointed out in a statement.
The mayor said it never crossed his mind to wrangle with the Senate or agitate the senators.

What he only wanted, he added, was for the Senate to provide him and other Makati City officials advance copies of questions to be asked by the senators, in keeping with Senate rules.

“Ngunit wala daw akong karapatan dito ayon sa tatlong senador, taliwas sa mga desisyon ng Korte Suprema [But according to the three senators, I am not entitled to this right],” Binay said, referring to pro-administration Senators Antonio Trillanes 4th, Alan Peter Cayetano and Aquilino Pimentel 3rd.

“Iginagalang ko po ang Senado bilang isang institusyon. nguni’t hindi po ako ang nagpakita ng pagsira sa dignidad nito. Ang tatlong senador at ang kanilang mga tinatawag na saksi ang syang sumisira sa pangalan at pagtitiwala sa institusyon ng Senado [I respect the Senate as an institution but it was not me who destroyed its dignity. The three senators and their so-called witnesses are destroying the integrity of the Senate],” the mayor added.

He noted that he wanted to help unravel the truth when he first appeared as a resource person in a Senate hearing.

“When the blue ribbon sub-committee started investigating the Makati City Hall Building 2, I went to the Senate believing that the baseless accusations against us will finally be cleared,” Binay said.

According to him, he and other Makati City officials who attended the hearing were humiliated by the three senators.

Binay said the senators only wanted to believe their accusers even if they did not present evidence to back up their allegations.

Hours before the Senate cited Binay in contempt, hundreds of resident gathered at the Makati City Hall Building 2 to show their support for Binay and other Makati officials.

    1. Junior is talking about “Abuse of authority”. Eh yon pagnanakaw ng pera ng bayan hindi kaya “abuse of authority” din yon?

    2. There comes a time when people should not go along with the abuses of government officials. The 3 stooges follow no rules. So when the Makati officials ask them to follow the rules and give them the questions before they appear, they are threatened with arrest if they do not show up. This will end up in court. The Makati officials will win because there is already a SC ruling stating their right to receive the questions before they attend. This is all about citizen’s rights when it gets to court. Somebody in the Senate will realize this and the citizens will not be arrested to avoid being caught not following the law and their own rules. The Senate wants to protect its powers, but in this case they have created a no win situation for themselves.
