MAKATI Mayor Jejomar Erwin Binay on Friday named the city’s five most child-friendly villages for 2014.
The five villages – Dasmariñas, West Rembo, Kasilawan, Guadalupe Viejo and South Cembo – were chosen for giving priority to the welfare and development of the youth in planning and implementing their programs and projects.
Binay, chairman of the city’s local council for the protection of children (LCPC), awarded a P50,000 cash prize, a trophy and a marker to each of the winning villages.
The criteria for evaluation included the functionality of the barangay council for the protection of children (BCPC), the presence and quality of a barangay information and reading center, playground, schools, barangay health stations, community support, day care centers, child protection and children participation.
Binay said this year’s search subjected the villages to rigid screening through three phases — validation of documents of the barangay, visitation of the selection committee and panel interview of the selected council members.
This year’s theme for National Children’s Month, “Bata Kasali Ka, Ikaw ay Mahalaga,” emphasizes the role and importance of children in nation building as well as their right to participate in the decision making in the society.
The winners were required to submit a project proposal that promotes the rights and welfare of children that will correspond to the amount of their cash prize to be able to claim it.
