MALACAÑANG on Tuesday said the police (PNP) and the military are now tracing down the group of armed men that abducted four people — three of them foreign visitors –from a resort on Samal Island in Davao Del Norte.
Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said even President Benigno Aquino 3rd is “closely monitoring” such an “important event.”
“At present, the PNP anti-kidnapping is in pursuit of the suspects in coordination with the Eastern Mindanao Command (of the AFP) and other government agencies to immediately resolve the (abduction),” the official told reporters.
The abduction of Kjartan Sekkingstad, a Norwegian and operations manager of the Ocean View Resort in Barangay Camudmud, Babak district on Samal island; Canadians John Ridsel and Robert Hall; and a Filipina identified only as Tess, came barely two weeks after Aquino went to the area to inspect the Island Garden City of Samal circumferential road project which was aimed at enhancing Davao del Norte’s tourism infrastructure.
The victims, according to Coloma, were reported by the regional police to have been abducted shortly before midnight on Monday.
“The PNP is thoroughly investigating the incident as they continue to track down the perpetrators,” he stressed.
“It is given that in cases such as this, the PNP and AFP and other government agencies concerned are taking the initiative to do what is needed,” Coloma added.
Reports said at least 20 armed men wearing bonnets and black shirts swooped down on the resort and initially took five people. However, a Canadian named Steven and his Japanese wife, Kazuka, were able to flee from their captors.
