Batangas: Two sophomore stu–dents from the University of the Philippines and De La Salle University-Taft and a father drowned while swimming in a private beach resort in Calatagan town on Thursday afternoon.
Batangas police director, Senior Supt. Omega Jireh Fidel, identified the victims as Hosea Jizo Pinto, 17, a 2nd year Business Management student in DLSU, and Therese Maria Cordero, who was taking up Development Studies in University of the Philippines, Manila.
Cordero’s father Ronald, 45, of Sun Valley Subdivision in Parañaque City likewise died while trying to save his daughter.
According to Micah Pinto, sister of Jizo, her brother’s Don Bosco Makati high school football team were having a reunion in a private resort owned by their relative in Barangay Bagong Silang in Calatagan when the incident happened.
Pinto said the group was just chatting along the breakwater when they were swept by a strong wave and gust of wind at about 1:30 p.m.
“The water was just knee-deep, they were not even swimming then,” she narrated.
Pinto said more than ten people were carried away by the big wave but some of them managed to swim back towards the breakwater.
Police said the Corderos were plucked from the sea by passing fishermen and were taken to Calatagan Medicare Hospital. However, they were declared dead on arrival at the emergency room.
Meanwhile, Pinto went missing for almost 17 hours until his body was found a few meters away from the shore of the same barangay the following day. His decomposing body was cremated and taken back to Manila on Friday.
Residents said the weather was not that bad when the accident happened. “It wasn’t raining, it was just cloudy, but the waves were high and the wind was strong,” a police investigator quoting a resident said.
