Man who paid loan with shabu meted life

VIRAC, Catanduanes: A man who paid his P6,000 loan with shabu (methamphetamine hydrochloride) was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Regional Trial Court and ordered to pay P500,000 in damages.

Presiding Judge Lelu P. Contreras of RTC Branch 43 here convicted John Joseph Gianan Romero for illegal delivery, dispensation, distribution and transportation of drugs pursuant to Sec. 5 of Republic Act 9165 or the Dangerous Drugs Act.

The case stemmed from a complaint of Edgar Rodriguez, from whom Romero borrowed P6,000 in September 2013. But Romero failed to pay his loan as promised. After several text messages, Romero said he would pay Rodriguez through an “item,” which the latter suspected to be illegal drugs.

Rodriguez sought the help of the police, and an entrapment was set at the barangay plaza, where Romero was arrested after handing over a sachet of shabu to the complainant.
