THE Mandaluyong City government gave assurances on Thursday that it will provide assistance to hundreds of families affected by the fire that razed an informal settler area in the city Wednesday noon.
Mayor Benhur Abalos said the city government will release P20 million to extend help to at least 1,800 residents whose houses were gutted by the biggest fire to hit the city in its history.
Abalos sought the quick approval of the City Council for the release of the calamity fund. The city government shoulders the food and basic needs of the affected residents in three evacuation centers in the city.
The city government gives home owners P10,000 in financial assistance, P5,000 for sharers and P3,000 for renters.
But because of the big number of fire victims, Abalos said they may have to scale down the financial assistance to accommodate all of them.
