THE MANILA Mavericks led by Maria Sharapova and Andy Murray will face the United Arab Emirates Royals in the International Premier Tennis League (IPTL) tilt at 7:30 p.m. today at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City. The Indian Aces and Singapore Slammers will battle in the first game at 4 p.m.
Besides Sharapova and Murray, the other members of the Manila Mavericks are France’s Jo-Wilfred Tsonga, 1998 French Open champion Carlos Moya, 2003 Wimbledon girls’ singles champion Kirsten Flipkens, Daniel Nestor and player coach Filipino-American Treat Huey.
“We are here to entertain the crowd and at the same time win. Everybody is excited,” Huey told reporters during the event’s press conference at the Edsa Shangrila Hotel in Mandaluyong City on Thursday. “It is really a great experience to be with these guys.”
“It’s going to be new and exciting format, there will be fast and short matches that audience can be very involved in,” added Huey.
The IPTL event will feature men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, mixed doubles, and legends’ singles matches.
Double Grand Slam singles winner Murray meets Croatian Martin Cilic while Sharapova clashes against Kristina Mladenovic in the first two singles matches. Huey will team up with Daniel Nestor to battle Nenad Zimonjic and Cilic in the men’s doubles event.
In the mixed doubles, Huey will partner with Kirsten Flipkens against Zimonjic and Mladenovic while Carlos Moya and Goran Ivanisevic will collide in a Mavericks-Royals match in the legends’ singles.
All pairings are still not official, according to IPTL officials.
On Saturday, the Manila Mavericks collide against Indian Aces at 7:30 p.m. after the UAE Royals and Singapore Slammers bout at 4 p.m.
On Sunday, the last day of the event, the Manila Mavericks meet the Singapore Slammers at 7:30 p.m. after the 4 p.m. game between the UAE Royals and Indian Aces.
The other stops of the IPTL tour are Singapore on December 2 to 4, New Delhi on December 6 to 8 and Dubai on December 11 to 13.
