The Manila Southwoods Golf & Country Club recently achieved designation as a “Fully Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary” by Audubon International; a U.S.-based NGO that promotes environmental stewardship in privately owned properties.

Southwoods is the 175th golf course in the world to receive the honor, the third course outside of North America, and first in the Asia Pacific region.

In 1997, Southwoods joined the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for golf Courses which provides guidance to golf courses to help preserve and enhance wildlife habitat, protect natural resources, and enhance environmental awareness within the Club and its surrounding communities.

Manila Southwoods Golf & Country Club has shown a strong commitment to its environment program. They are to be commended for their efforts to provide a sanctuary for wildlife on the golf course property,” said Ms. Joellen Zeh, Staff Ecologist for Audubon International. “To reach full certification, a golf course must demonstrate that they are maintaining a high degree of environmental quality in a number of areas,” explained Ms. Zeh.

These categories include: Environmental Planning, Wildlife & Habitat Management, Outreach & Education, Water Conservation, Integrated Pest management, and Water Quality Management.

Southwoods Chairman Robert John L. Sobrepeña expressed his appreciation and full support for the Club’s environmental stewardship efforts. “Through the success of the Audubon program at South woods, we have shown that properly-managed golf courses provide numerous benefits to the environment and the local communities. Now we will use Southwoods Audubon program as a model to be followed by other

“Hopefully, this will encourage other Philippine golf courses to follow our lead and embrace environmental stewardship, stated Mr. Sobrepena.”
