A group of traders from Manila’s business districts of Malate, Ermita and Binondo on Tuesday picked Vice President and United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) standard bearer Jejomar Binay as their top choice for president, noting his “proven track record of public service and accomplishments.”
In a statement, Vicky Espiritu, president of athletic events group EAMvents, Inc., said Binay “is the most qualified” among the five candidates because he ”delivered basic services to the people and could be a role model in a community in terms of performance.”
“Binay is the only choice,” said Espiritu, who is also a restaurateur and an active member of a business community in Malate, Ermita and Binondo areas.
“We need someone who can steer the economy that will translate to job-generation among today’s graduates and young professionals,” she said.
“It is only then that we can say we are on a positive and smooth journey towards progress and a better Philippines,” she added.
The group criticized Sen. Grace Poe-Llamanzares for being “a neophyte, a novice and with no solid achievement to bank on.”
They questioned Poe’s continued defense of her husband, Teodoro Misael Daniel Vera “Neil” Llamanzares’ citizenship. To date, Poe’s spouse has never renounced his American citizenship, along with their children.
Espiritu’s older sister, Zonnie, is said to be a close friend of Poe’s adoptive father and the late action king Fernando Poe Jr. but the elder Espiritu is not inclined to support Poe in her bid, especially since the family faces questions on their properties in the US.
