Even as he instructed all concerned offices to prepare the city from the onslaught of heavy rains, Manila Mayor Joseph Ejercito Estrada stressed that flooding can be minimized if drainage systems were cleared of obstructions.
“By latest count, we have completed 80 upgrading, concreting and drainage improvement projects since July, 2014. There are also 50 more projects already bidded out and in various stages of implementation,” said City Engineer Robert Bernardo.
First to be completed were the projects along the following streets: Abucay, Molave, Bagac, Alvarez, Anacleto, Lope de Vega, M. Natividad, T. Mapua, Oroquieta, Dimasalang, Instruccion, Kundiman and Manga.
Completed two years ago were drainage improvement, upgrading and concreting of streets Coral, Eduque, Paraiso, Malaya, A. Flores, Peñafrancia, F. Agoncillo, Escoda, Biyaya, Certeza, F. Manalo, Kahilum, Paco Roman, Revellin, Suter, Syquia, Sarmiento and Remedios.
Ongoing projects that were started in 2015 are rain-water drainage systems along streets Sta. Maria, Fernandez, Leyte, Perfecto, Narcisa Rizal, Corregidor, Yakal, Katamanan, Mayhaligue, Manga, Rosarito, Alley 1642, Reten, Navarra, Miguelin, Juaning, Crisostomo and Calabash Road.
Projects along streets Firmeza, Sisa, San Antonio from Paz to Quirino Ave., Nickel, Trece de Agosto, Perdigon, Liwayway, Teresa, Abdon, Osorio, V. Serrano, Morong, Narra, Padre Algue (two projects), Muelle de Binondo, Laguna, Prenza, M. de Santos, San Lazaro, Altura, R. Cristobal, J. de la Rosa, M. V. de los Santos, P. Noval, Arellano and Interior Pampanga have been finished.
Other ongoing road and drainage projects are those along Juan Nolasco, Concha, Perla, Kagitingan, Maharlika, various alleys in Barangay 112 Zone 9, Alvarado, Mayhaligue, V. Serrano, R. Fernandez, Limay, Batangas (two projects), Caballeros, Ipil, Sobriedad, Santander, Rosarito, Casanas, Moret and Eloisa.
Also being readied are projects along G. M. Tolentino, Santisima Trinidad, Antonio, Alfredo, Fajardo, P. Campa, P. Paredes, Zapiro, Nakar, P. H. Lim (two projects), Rubi, Magistrado Araullo, Magistrado Imperial, Bagong Panahon, Florante, Cisne, Balagtas, Floresca, Bataan, Antenor, Reposo, Alabasgtro, various alleys in Barangay 108 Zone 9, and Sagrada Familia.
