Mapua tries to surge into win column

CELLAR dweller Mapua Institute of Technology Cardinals try to surge into the win column when they face College of St. Benilde (CSB) Blazers while Lyceum of the Philippines Pirates seek for fourth win as they collide with Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC) Generals today in the 90th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) basketball tournament elimination round at the San Juan Arena.

Despite losing their first five matches, the Cardinals expressed confidence they can overcome the challenge of the Blazers at 2 p.m. A tough battle is also expected between the Lyceum Pirates and the EAC Generals at 4 p.m.

The secondary matches pit the Mapua Red Robins against CSB-La Salle Greenies at 12 noon and EAC Brigadiers against Lyceum Junior Pirates at 6 p.m.

After losing to San Beda College Red Lions, 68-84, last July 9, the Pirates bounced back with two straight victories, the first was over Mapua (80-78) on July 14, which was followed with an 84-80 victory over host Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers on July 18.

Their back-to-back wins enabled coach Bonnie Tan’s Pirates to remain in a tie with idle San Sebastian College Stags at the fourth spot with similar 3-2 win-loss slate behind San Beda Red Lions (5-0), Arellano University Chiefs (4-1) and University of Perpetual Help Altas (3-1).
