• Mar apologizes for Wack Wack outburst

Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Manuel “Mar” Roxas 2nd has apologized for an incident at the Wack Wack Golf and Country Club in Mandaluyong City, Metro Manila, for which the club suspended him for two months.

Wack Wack General Manager Francisco Legarda announced Roxas’ suspension “for violation of club rules and regulations” on Friday after several meetings with club members and officers headed by the club president, Philip Ella Juico.

The suspension stemmed from the incident on April 6 at Wack Wack’s registration office where Roxas was seen cursing and shouting at some staff.

In a statement posted on the ABS-CBN website, Roxas said he accepts the suspension. “I do not consider myself above any law, rule or regulation, accordingly I accede to it,” he added.

Roxas also apologized but denied he cursed anyone. “It was not my intention to hurt or insult anyone, and I did not curse at anyone either,” he said.

Earlier reports indicated that on April 6, Roxas arrived at the club in Mandaluyong City with his wife, Korina, and a guest.

Roxas had wanted professional golfer Rey Pagunsan to give golf lessons to his guest.

When club staffers asked him to pay the P5,100 green fee for Pagunsan, Roxas reportedly blew his top. The country club charges a specific fee for non-members entering the course.

“The sanction imposed on Mr. Roxas is consistent with action taken by the club to uphold its policies and to maintain good order at all times for the enjoyment of the club by its members and their dependents and guests,” Legarda said.

“Wack Wack Country Club is a private club. It is a basic and time-honored policy of the club to protect its privacy and that of its members. It is therefore our desire that with this statement and the action taken on this incident, we shall now consider this matter closed and move on,” he added.

In his posted statement, Roxas said he has been a member of Wack Wack for more than 20 years. “I have had absolutely no record of misdemeanor or any inappropriate behavior in all these years at sa haba nitong panahon ni minsan wala akong nakaaway o nakagalitan [not once did I have a fight with or berate anyone]” he said.
