PRESIDENTIAL candidate Sen. Grace Poe’s pronouncement that she will name President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino 3rd as her anti-corruption adviser is a mere gimmick, the camp of Liberal Party (LP) standard-bearer Manuel “Mar” Roxas 2nd said on Thursday.
Akbayan party-list Rep. Ibarra Gutierrez, the spokesman for the LP-led administration coalition for the 2016 polls, accused Poe of riding on the President’s popularity to boost her candidacy since she had rejected LP’s earlier offer to be the running mate of Roxas.
“I don’t believe her. Obviously, there is a move to ride with the President’s popularity here. I am happy that Senator Poe recognizes the gains of the administration in fighting corruption, but she is being unfair by insinuating that she is close to the President,” Gutierrez said.
Poe is running for President as an independent candidate, and her running mate is Sen. Francis Escudero.
She and Escudero are allies of Aquino but they do not belong to any political party.
Roxas and Aquino, on the other hand, are both from the ruling LP.
In the latest Social Weather Stations survey released a week ago, Poe ranked second among the presidential bets with 24 percent, and Roxas ranked third with 18 percent.
The President endorsed Roxas’ presidential run in July 2015, with Camarines Sur Rep. Leni Robredo as Roxas’ running mate.
