CALBAYOG CITY, Samar: Vote-buying is not and has never been a policy of the ruling Liberal Party (LP), the party’s standard-bearer Manuel “Mar” Roxas 2nd said here.
Roxas issued the statement in connection with a viral video showing an apparent supporter of Roxas egging the crowd to cheer for Roxas in exchange for an envelope, as well as asking questions about Roxas also in exchange for another envelope.
“I condemn this act and this has never been in our platform and practice. This is wrong,” the presidential candidate of the ruling Liberal Party told reporters.
“I haven’t seen the video, but if this indeed happened, we will track who are those supporters and we will stop this act,” Roxas added.
Roxas is confident of scoring a victory in typhoon-hit areas in the Visayas despite persistent and scathing criticims that he did not do enough to help the victims of super Typhoons Yolanda and Ruby in 2013.
He was secretary of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) at the time.
Yolanda wreaked havoc in Eastern Samar, Leyte, Capiz and other Visayan provinces in November 2013, leaving at least 6,000 people dead and billions worth of crops and infrastructure damaged or destroyed.
Ruby, on the other hand, struck Eastern Samar shortly after Yolanda, leaving three people dead and a million others affected.
“I feel very good about my chances here because I am banking on the truth. I need not weave fiction because the people here know the truth,” Roxas told reporters after campaigning in Borongan, Eastern Samar, with Kris Aquino, President Benigno Aquino 3rd’s youngest sister.
Roxas said as DILG secretary, he was able to deliver more than 10 million food packs to the victims of the Yolanda.
He added that he also stayed on the ground during the wrath of Ruby to ensure roads are cleared and fuel is supplied to generators to restore power as soon as possible.
