ROXAS City, Capiz: THE tandem of Senators Grace Poe and Francis Escudero has taken a swipe at Liberal Party (LP) standard-bearer Manuel “Mar” Roxas 2nd for his failure to maximize the potential of his home province, Capiz, despite being “close” to three presidents of the country.
Escudero on Wednesday said the province is very lucky to have a son like Roxas, who has been allied with the current and previous administrations, because the province could benefit a lot from it.
He noted that the LP presidential candidate has been close to former Presidents Joseph Estrada and Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and incumbent President Benigno Aquino 3rd.
Roxas served as secretary of Department of Trade Industry (DTI) during the time of Estrada and was reappointed during the time of Arroyo before he was elected as First District representative of Capiz.
He then ran and won a Senate seat in 2004 but lost to then Makati City Mayor Jejomar Binay during the 2010 vice presidential race.
Escudero said Roxas could have done more for the his province, considering his closeness to Malacanang but unfortunately his home province still faces the problems it has been facing for many years.
He clarified that he is not saying that Roxas did nothing for his province, only that the LP standard-bearer could have done more as compared to what people are seeing now.
Escudero said aside from more infrastructures and water and redistribution of wealth should be a priority because the number of poor people in the province is way more than the rich people particularly in Roxas city.
“Any congressman, senator or Cabinet secretary who would be given a chance to be close to the President even for a year would be able to improve his or her home province,” he added.
Escudero cited the case of Sen. Franklin Drilon, who was able to help bring progress to his home province of Iloilo.
Drilon, like Roxas, has also been allied with the Arroyo administration at some point as well as the current leadership.
Poe said she was saddened to find out that until now there are still many victims of Typhoon Yolanda in the province who are yet to get needed help from the government.
Many, she added, have not received emergency shelter assistance (ESA) from the government more than two years after the typhoon devastated several provinces in the Visayas region.
Poe declined to give further comments on the supposed failure of Roxas to improve his home province, but she assured that there will be more benefits and development projectst that will be grnated to the province of Capiz under her leadership.
