INTERIOR Secretary Manuel “Mar” Roxas has directed the Philippine National Police (PNP) to conduct a thorough investigation on the ambush of Iligan City Rep. Vicente Belmonte Jr. on Thursday that killed some of the lawmaker’s bodyguards.
Roxas said a deeper probe is needed so that the perpetrators will be immediately arrested.
“The congressman was hit in broad daylight and the van was set aflame. Hindi basta-basta ang mga gumawa nito (those behind this are no amateurs) Roxas said during his weekly briefing with high-ranking officials of the PNP on Friday.
Belmonte was travelling to Iligan City from Laguindingan Airport when a group of unidentified men blocked his convoy and opened fire.
Four of his men died, including two PNP personnel. Belmonte and two others were wounded.
Criminal Investigation and Detection Group chief Benjamin Magalong said initial findings by the police showed that high-powered firearms such as M16s were used in the attack on Belmonte.
Roxas said the PNP can deploy the Special Action Force to Iligan if needed to control organized armed groups.
