Marawi City mayor, driver injured in CDO ambush

KIDAPAWAN CITY: Marawi City Mayor Fahad “Pre” Salic and his driver were injured Saturday when still unidentified gunmen ambushed them in the southern Philippine city of Cagayan de Oro.

They suffered multiple gunshot wounds and were brought to the Polymedic Medical Plaza for treatment, investigators said.

Salic, who is gunning for the gubernatorial seat in Lanao del Sur in the May 9 elections under the opposition United Nationalist Alliance ticket, and his driver have been declared safe, an aide to the mayor said.

Initial investigation showed that the daring attack occurred at around 2 a.m. on Mastersons Ave. near the gates of Pryce Plaza Hotel while Salic and his driver were on their way home to Marawi City on board a red Ford Ranger.

The attackers – between five and seven armed men – escaped on board a white van after they fired at the victims.

The police, who were tracking the suspects and eyeing “rido” (clan feud) as the motive for the attack, recovered from the crime scene some empty shells of various calibers used for M16 and AK47 rifles.

No individual or group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack that targeted Salic. MOH SAADUDDIN
