Political difference with Binay led to tandem talks’ collapse

Sen. Ferdinand Marcos Jr., has finally crossed the Rubicon on Monday as he declared his bid for the vice presidency in next year’s elections.

In a statement Monday night, the 58-year-old son and namesake of the late president said he is running as an independent as he dispelled speculations that he will tandem with either Vice President Jejomar Binay or Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.

“I have decided to run for Vice President in the May 2016 elections…All these talks of teaming up with certain leading presidential candidates have been mere speculations,” Marcos said in a statement.

Marcos said he visited and consulted with Duterte last Wednesday and the mayor assured him of his support to his candidacy for vice president.

Another vice presidential aspirant, Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano, also met with Duterte the night before.

“He (Duterte) was gracious enough to promise me his support should I decide to run for Vice President. I too will support Mayor Duterte if and when he runs for President,” Marcos said.

Duterte last week hinted that he might run for President in 2016 citing “tremendous pressure” form his friends and ordinary people.

Marcos went to Davao City consulted Duterte, two days after fellow Nationalista Party (NP) member Senator Alan Peter Cayetano held a press conference in Davao City and declared his intention to run for vice president in 2016.

Cayetano’s decision to make the declaration in Davao City was supposedly part of an effort to convince Duterte to heed the people’s clamor to run for president.

Marcos also confirmed that he was invited to be the running mate of Vice President Jejomar Binay and that initial talks were made between their camps.

“But any team up with the Vice President must be rooted on a shared vision for our country, a common platform of government as well as political perspectives.

Unfortunately, it would be difficult for me to tame our political differences,” Marcos said.
Binay, 72 was a human rights lawyer during the Marcos regime and had defended several opposition leaders and personalities in court.

In announcing his vice presidential bid, Marcos said that he believes that elected officials have an obligation to the people to help change the course of the nation’s history by removing the politics of personality.

“To me it (politics of personality) is one of the primary causes why our country today has become a soft state where the rich become richer, the poor become poorer, graft and corruption is endemic, the drug menace pervades, injustice is the norm and government incompetence is accepted is the new normal,” Marcos noted.

With no clear presidential candidate, Marcos said that he have decided to put his political fortune in the hands of the Filipino people and let them judge him if he is worthy of their trust to be Vice President.

“I humbly ask them to judge whether or not I am worthy of their trust to be Vice President on the strength of my performance as a public servant in the last 26 years,” he added in his statement.

Marcos served as governor, vice governor and congressional representative of Ilocos Norte. His initial attempt to get a Senate seat in 1995 ended in a failure. He however, was among the winners in the 2010 senatorial race.

If elected to a higher position, Marcos vowed to prioritize infrastructure, agriculture and education and restore the Filipino pride.

“We had at some point in our history that pride, that sense of nationhood but we see it to have gone astray and we have lost it,” Marcos said in an earlier interview.

Marcos’ announcement of his vice presidential bid now bring the vice presidential race to five-man and a woman fight.

Aside from Marcos, also vying for the post are Senators Francis Escudero, Antonio Trillanes 4th, Alan Peter Cayetano, and Camarines Sur Rep. leni Robredo. Sen. Gregorio Honasan on the other hand has yet to make an announcement regarding his political plans for 2016.

    >>> Filipino People ( those who are NATURAL BORN FILIPINO CITIZEN) of the Philippines !!!

Kaya PILIPINAS AT MGA FILIPINO TUNAY….. MAGBAGO NA TAYO AT HUWAG MABUHAY AT MANINDIGAN HINDI AYON LAMANG SA MGA INTRIGA AT SIRAAN NG MGA KASAPI, LIDERATO AT NG MGA MEDIA KOMENTARISTA AT REPORTERS.

  2. President Marcos with all his mistakes was among the presidents who loved his country so much that he was able to do a lot of infractructure for the Filipinos! As of today, nobody was able to match what he has done for the country. I do believe his beloved son BBMarcos can continue the legacy that his father did, as God will guide him!

Run for president. Trust your mother’s instict. Save this country from further deterioration.

  4. In the ballot form, put blank in president and vote only vice president. . . . ha, ha, ha.

  5. it is good and wise decision by our BBM, to run independent with no political party, As he said a lot of differences between other parties regarding their responsibiity for the country. May kasabihan tayo na its BETTER TO BE ALONE THAT TO HAVE A BAD COMPANION.. All Filipinos all over the world knows this…
Feed your mind. BBM all the way.

After 5 presidents, sick and tired of the same ROUTINE. Yup, I wanna see what BBM can do for the country. Go BBM!!!

I think he best choice by the people for Vice Presidency is Bongbong Marcos.
He has all what it takes to be a Vice President.

  9. What motivates him to run for VP is “testing the waters” whether he’ll run for the highest office. He has to do this because he is not getting younger and the family’s desire to bring back the glory of the Marcoses and to bury his father at the Libingan ng mga Bayani. His strengths are obviously the richness of the Marcos family, his experience as politician and his educational attainment. But when it comes to the masses, he’ll probably fail. I am not too sure whether the business community will cooperate. What you see is what you get. If he wishes to get with the masses he’ll be appreciated to show simplicity (not always on suit or luxury shirts) and humility. I wish him luck.

This is a rejoinder for Jun Adan. Is the Philippines better off today than 30 years ago?
There are really people like this Adan who until this time cannot accept reality.
You must know by now that is Marcos who went to prison for corruption. Study the
    facts stupid.

  11. Solid North!!!!.BBM is very much qualified for either President or Vice President. 26 yrs of actual working experience.

  12. Honestly I am quite surprise that many of these guys ar competing for the VP post. As far as I can remember, a VP has not been responsible task in the government. And if VP candidate gives lot of promises, how will he or she do it?

  13. silvino sarga on

Just do it Senator, the Solid North is with you. A win could be an affirmation that the 1970’s martial law era was not not a failure but only a demonization of the Marcos name.
Win and re-write the 1960-80 portion of our history.

  14. willie macawili on

Oh my God, a kettle calling the tea pot black. Our country riddled with graft and corruption? During whose time when these things are most rampant, may I ask?Of course Marcos Jr. has no choice but to run independent for he is a burden to any presidential candidate. He may not be a bad person but his name carries too much stigma. What more, it came to the open that his still ambitious mother is all behind this. He may still make it considering the solid Ilocano and Waray votes. The rest of the spoils will be divided among various aspirants. All I can say is: Oh my god, OH MY GOD? WHERE ARE YOU?

  15. A big blunder for BBM running alone without a Presidential candidate.Good if Duterte runs and gets him as his runningmate knowing that Cayetano is also waiting for Duterte.Baka malaglag Na siya later on.Anyway, I will vote for Marcos no matter what.

  16. Junk BongBong Marcos for VP and instead VOTE for LENI ROBREDO, a woman of simplicity, honesty and sincere government service for poor people in “slippers” and under and outside the fringes of a progressive society.
Bong Bong Marcos is the “fruit of a poisonous tree” and must not be picked, plucked and eaten for the people will get “indigestion” of the corrupt wealth stolen by his father.
Marcos needs no financial backers since his stolen billions of dollars left and hidden by his parents from the Filipino people will finance his campaign. Marcos is just testing the waters as to how deep his political support will be gauge by this run and next to the Presidency. Let us not give this unapologetic guy the chance to even get a vote as incentive and motivation for him to run for the Presidency in 2022! Down withe MARCOSES!

    • Willie Enriquez on

Give the Marcoses a chance again. Perhaps this time will be different at all. Madame Meldy made some mistake in her life. But she did her best as a FL to improved the country despite the damaged they have done. Compared to others who pocket and gave the country a Junk Project. The LRT was the start with a Brand New Belgian Made Coaches much superior than the China made replacement. While, the Arroyo and the rest settled for less Quality. And that’s what others LRT failures the Fun in the Philippines you have nowadays. They have done something wrong. But, They some class at all. I will still vote for the Marcoses again. Tausugs for the Ilocanos not the Bicolana housewife.

    • ronto caniada on

Agree, Lani Robredo will be the winner. she will be wearing her sleeper when she go to work in Malacanang.

    • If the father may have sinned against the Republic of the Philippines as others see it (Not for me) doesn’t mean that the son also sinned. We are all accountable with our own action. If the father is corrupt as they say doesn’t mean that the son is also corrupt. The motive of Bongbong is so clear and we have clearly seen it by what he has done and what he is doing until now. All he did was not for himself but he did all what he has to do for the people. That is a clear sign of a servant who is worthy to be trusted to a higher position.

  17. The viable choices for Jojo Binay’s vice president running mate are as follows:

    1. Dick Gordon.

    2. Serge Osmena

    3. Kris Aquino*

    4. Loren Legarda.*

Forget Bongbong Marcos. He has too many political baggages to drag around. He is not fit to become president if something should happen to the president elect Jojo Binay.

*Not fit as presidential material sub in case of president elect unable to continue serving but…good for a “time being”…panakip butas. Definitely superior choices in comparison to Gringo, Alan, Leni, Bongbong, et al.

    Pepeton

  18. Great…and what a very unflattering picture to boot. But thanks for the news anyway. He is right, we should look beyond personalties and look at the substance of the candidate. Or really look at personalities from a distance with suspended biases and we can get a bigger perspective. Like looking at a picture so near than looking at it from a distance.

  19. talagang kakaiba na ang eleksyon sa Pilipinas. A vice-presidential candidate throwing his hat in VP derby, even without a presidential candidate or support of his political party. how weird. You wouldn’t expect this from a candidate who’s supposed to be educated and mature.

  20. I think what Marcos Jr. did to declared himself as a candidate for VP is a sign of bravery, honesty and an intellectual integrity. By doing what he did, he earned my utmost respect .

I believed he is a man with a good intention and a mission for the welfare of the Pilipino people. I wish I could be his campaign manager.

There’s a saying its hard to fly like and EAGLE when you are SOARING with a bunch of TURKEYS.

    • We should elect a candidate that presents the most doable vision of making the country great.. where the family of nations look up to Filipinos as one of the best, if not the best in the world.. a candidate that has a vision for the welfare of the common Filipinos.. not a candidate that will continue what was seem to be a defective governance that brings to its lowest the pride and honor of our soldiers.. teachers.. workers..of the Filipinos..
      #Duterte-BBM2016

Political difference? Yes. Binay wants to continue his corrupt activities when elected. Besides that, a word of advice to the Marcoses: Don’t be fooled by Binay because:
    1. remember those insulting words of Binay against Marcos during the 70s
    2. Binay just wanted to make sure to get enough votes from the Solid North
    3. Binay is NOT sincere in saying “…move on”. Binay is a corrupt politician and always tries his best to exploit people for his corrupt ambition.
To all Ilokanos, please DO NOT vote for Binay.

  22. Many must have been disappointed by the declaration of Sen. Marcos for VEEP, insterad of President, but it could be a blessing. He will be a seasoned and wiser by the time he has the chance to head the Philippine govertnment, having been a Governor,Congressman, Senator and VEEP. Nobbody can match his political experience by then.

The other Veep candidates, ‘Escuderoe’, Roebredoe’ and ‘Cayetanoe’ or, ‘Antonioe’ T. and possibly ‘Hoenasan’, now have now a real run for their money. To the skeptics, there’s still such thing as ‘solid north’ which he has; strong family and political ties in the Visayas; and, the support of strongman Duterte in Mindanao.
    He has LuzViMinda!

BBM needs no presidential candidate to team up with; any of them will only be a heavy ‘luggage’ to his candidacy.

    Veep BBM 2016!
