From generation to generation, the iconic role of Filipina superhero superheroine Darna has been passed on from one actress to another keeping her alive as ever in pop culture. No less than Vilma Santos had the honor of first portraying Darna for the cameras in 1973, followed by Sharon Cuneta in 1986, Angel Locsin in 2005, finally and Marian Rivera 2009. The iconic role in fact helped launched these women’s careers to superstardom.
As everyone knows, the lucky lady who has been chosen to be this generation’s Darna is Liza Soberano, and her predecessor, GMA Primetime Queen Rivera is more than happy to pass on the role to the ABS-CBN talent eight years since she channeled Mars Ravelo’s most beautiful muse.
During Rivera’s launch as the newest endorser of Snow Crystal White Tomato Food Supplement on July 27, she openly shared her thoughts on Soberano being chosen as the next Darna.
“Okay naman. Maganda siya. Perfect para sa kanya,” Rivera enthused at an ambush interview with Enertainment reporters
When asked to give a message to Soberano, Rivera replied: “Nakakahiya namang mag-message bilang hindi naman kami magkakilalang dalawa. Nakakahiya naman. Pero good luck!””
“For sure naman, kahit sinong magsuot din niyan, siguradong susuportahan ng tao. Especially kung siya na parang majority naman yata, siya ang gusto. At ang ganda, tisay at sexy. Kaya niya iyan,” she continued.
In 2015, when it was announced Darna was due for a movie remake, director Erik Matti said he accepted the project so he could introduce the character to a whole new generation of Filipinos.
As for Rivera who last donned the Darna costume eight years ago, she is about to wear another one very soon as she stars in her new prime time project “Super Ma’am” with Comedy Queen Aiai Delas Alas as her special guest.
“Meron kaming fight scenes. Pinapagalitan niya ako simula umpisa dahil sabi niya matanda na daw siya pero pinag fight scene ko pa rin siya. Pero nag enjoy naman siya kasi nasa ibabaw kami ng tren nag fight scene, kaming dalawa pero wala kaming double,” she shared this time during her Mega Prime endorsement stint on July 25.
Besides happy to work with delas Alas again after their movie “Kambal sa Kiyeme,” Rivera, on a personal note, is even happier for her good friend who will wed her 23-year-old fiancé Gerald Sibayan in November in the Unites States.
“I will be part of the entourage. Kambal kami kaya syempre dapat kasali ako,” Rivera ended laughing.
