Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) Deputy Administrator Gloria Banas may be dismissed from the service over the nepotism charges filed against her by a group of Filipino seafarers, the Civil Service Commission (CSC) said on Tuesday.
CSC Chairman Francisco Duque 3rd said she can be sacked even if she is an appointee of President Benigno Aquino 3rd.
A complaint was filed against Banas in Malacañang by the United Filipino Seafarers after she appointed her brother, Rizal Victoria and her sister-in-law Melinda Victoria, to sensitive posts under her watch.
Duque said that under the law on nepotism, an official cannot appoint her relatives within the 3rd degree of consanguinity.
“What she did was a clear violation on the law on nepotism. It is a grave offense punishable by dismissal from service,” he said.
Banas, according to Marina Administrator Maximo Mejia, has been on leave for more than a week.
“It would serve her well if she takes the appointments or those she appointed out of her office or recall their appointments,” Duque said.
