ONE marine trooper was killed and three others were wounded after their contingent was ambushed by Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) bandits on Tuesday morning in a remote village in Sulu, a military official said. Col. Jose Johriel Cenabre, commander of the Second Marine Brigade, said the ambush incident occurred at around 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday some three kilometers from the poblacion of Parang town. Cenabre said their troops had just come from securing a tree planting activity by the local Jaycees and the provincial environmental office when they were ambushed by an unknown number of ASG bandits. “Our troops were able to retaliate and there was a 30-minute firefight,” Cenabre said, but decline to name the slain marine trooper pending notification of his kin. The marine commander said that no one was hurt among the civilians who were being escorted by their troops at the time the ambush incident took place.
