The Mariners’ Polytechnic College will be sending more than 15 swimmers to the Philippine Swim League (PSL) 52nd Leg Series dubbed as The Manila Times College (TMTC) Swimming Championship scheduled on January 26 at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Manila.
According to Mariners Polytechnic College President Commodore Dante Jimenez, they have already formed a formidable team led by Royal Bangkok Swim Meet gold medallist Jifrey Azur.
The PSL-TMTC swim event is a qua-lifying tournament for the 2015 World Universiade in Gwangju, South Korea since the PSL is the national sports association for swimming of the Fe-deration of School Sports Association of the Philippines (Fessap) and the longest-running swimming grass-roots program in the country.
Fessap, recognized by the International University Sports Federation (FISU), owns the right to represent the Philippines in the Universiade.
“We thanked PSL president Susan Papa for inviting our Mariners School swimmers and we will send swimmers both in our Naga and Legazpi branches headed by Jifrey Azur,” commodore Jimenez said.
Azur, who will be sent by both PSL and Mariners in the Cape Town meet in February, is aiming to earn a ticket to the World Universiade when he vies for honors in the PSL-TMTC swim meet.
Papa said that the Universiade is a combined educational and cultural feature with 12 days of sports events that includes swimming competitions allowing college students- athletes all over the world to celebrate with the host country in true spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie in this every two years event.
“Universiade is the only summer multisport events in the world that connects student at both academic and athletic level,” added papa.
The PSL-TMTC will be participated by 50 different swimming schools and clubs with the winners will be awarded with gold, silver and bronze, and trophies for the most outstanding swimmers.
