Sochi Winter Olympian Michael Christian Martinez won’t be competing in the prestigious 2014 World Junior Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria. The 17-year-old Martinez opted to skip the world meet to recuperate from a knee injury he sustained during training for the Winter Olympics held in Sochi Russia last month. The decision was made based on the recommendation of his personal coach and attending doctor. The Filipino skating sensation, who started competing at the age of eight, wound up 19th overall by scoring 64.81 points in short program and 119.44 points in free skate for a total score of 184.25 points. So far, Martinez has more than 190 medals and trophies including victories in the Crystal Skate of Romania in 2012 held in Brasov and Skate Helena-European Criterium in 2013 held in Serbia. Martinez is looking to qualify anew in the 2018 Winter Olympics to be held in PyeongChang, South Korea. EMIL C. NOGUERA
