Mary Jane narrates how she ended up in death row

Below is supposedly a verbatim transcript of handwritten account of Mary Jane Veloso, a Filipino in death row in Indonesia. The original copy of the said account is reportedly still retained by the Philippine Embassy in Jakarta.

This copy was provided to Bulatlat.com by the National Union of Peoples’ Lawyers, a Filipino lawyer rights group who took on Veloso’s case as progressive groups carry on their last ditch efforts to save her from execution.

In broken English, Veloso narrated her despair and harrowing tale on how she ended up as a Filipina in death row.

The Manila Times reprints Veloso’s account with expressed permission from Bulatlat.com.

Translation
I worked in Dubai as a domestic helper. My contract was for two years. But I worked only for 10 months because I nearly became a rape victim. I decided to come back to the Philippines on Dec. 31, 2009. Back in my country, my money was not enough because I need to send my son to school. I need to work again.

I went to Manila to apply in an agency several times, again as a domestic helper. But three months later, I found none. The agency did not contact me. One day, Christine asked me about work. She is our neighbor. My family knows her because she goes to Malaysia almost every week to buy shampoo, lotions, perfume, among others. All the people in our village know that her business is buy and sell.

When she asked me to work as a domestic helper in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, I told her that I want to but have no money to buy a ticket.

She assured me not to worry and that I will have to pay for it with my first two months’ salary.

This is a blessing. I accepted and thanked her.

On April 21, 2010, Wednesday, Christine and I went to Malaysia. I brought only two jeans, two shirts and underwear inside my backpack.

We stayed in Sun Lagoon Hotel near the Pyramid Mall. During our three-day stay, we would always eat out and shop for my personal needs. But I said that it won’t fit my bag. She told me not worry because her boyfriend will buy me a new bag.

On Saturday evening, her boyfriend called and told us to meet them in a parking lot. I saw their white car. We approached them. Christine’s boyfriend’s name is Prince. There were other men whom I don’t know.

One was black and tall, one was fat and has curly hair. There was another one who was not fat. One of them said that they were informed that I needed a bag. So they bought one for me. I thanked them.

We returned to the hotel. Christine carried the bag. When we were inside the room, I asked Christine why the bag was heavy. She said it was because it is brand new. I checked all the zipper and pockets of the bag. All were empty and did not think that something was wrong with it.

I packed all my things in the bag. After packing, Christine handed me a brown envelope that contained $500 and an Air Asia ticket. She told me to fly to Indonesia for seven days for the holidays and meet some of her friends there. She said I will start my work as soon as I returned to Kuala Lumpur.

I did not have a choice. When I get back, I can start my work because it is important for me and my children.

I rode a taxi to the airport at around 3:00 a.m. on Apr. 25, Sunday. My flight was at 7:00 a.m. Christine gave me her friends’ contact number. She said that I can contact them when I reach my hotel. I landed in Indonesia Airport at around 8:30 a.m. But when my bag was put inside the scanner, the Indonesians asked me to do it over and over again, around two to three times. Then I was brought to an office where they asked again if they can check my bag. He checked it but did not see anything. Then the man asked if he can cut my bag and I agreed because I know that there was nothing wrong with it as I have checked it. But when they cut my bag, they saw a black plastic bag, inside was an aluminum foil. I asked what was the problem but then I was brought to another office. Here, they opened the aluminum foil and found a powder that was color light brown. The men checked the powder, which then turned into solid. The man asked me if I know what it is and I answered that I don’t know.

They all laughed at me, saying that it was heroin, a kind of drugs. My body felt so cold. I could not speak. I just cried and cried. I knew my life was finished. Drugs is number one illegal. I hate myself on why I believed Christine and why I never doubted her. Now, I’m here. But I do not know anything.

  1. she might be telling the truth being a provincial girl not aware of the kindness extended to her with something to be in returned. There are so many who pretended to be good for as long they can use you, but in reality they are the one who will eat you up or down your life when no more to get from you. i had a very bad experienced to a woman who pretended to be good but being tactless this woman told me her activity that started my suspicion on her but this too late to realize in associating with her. The best thing is to get out away from her Anyway I am not afraid to tell the concern agencies about her activity similar to human trafficking. The only thing is our Justice system. Christine should be investigated to save her life but nothing was done. This is what we call if you dont have money then you have to carry the burden of the wrong doing or evil works of other people.

As an Englishman lucky enough to have friends who have travelled, a reasonable education, access to books and easy access to the Internet. I am fortunately wise enough not to fall prey to scams such as the one this poor lady has. I really don’t know how it could be done but any filipino/filipina going abroad to work needs to be educated about the dangers: giving bags and presents are known scams. Never, never, never ever take a bag or case belonging to somebody else on to an aircraft or through a customs point. For other filipinas wanting go abroad make sure you use a licenced agency to find work the POEA website list those that are licenced. I really don’t what will happen to Mary as her recent reprieve is temporary which means she will still be executed.

  2. I believe in Mary Jane Veloso’s side of the story, the mere fact that Cristine took her to Malaysia, staying in a hotel, gave her 500 dollars, this Cristine and his boyfriend are involved in sending someone to be a drug mule. Why not our government won’t investigate Cristine? How many more victims of Cristine do we need? Hope we have death penalty for drug syndicates here in our country.

  3. ‘Iuwi ang aking bangkay.’ – Bring my body home.

This is Mary Jane Veloso’s last wish, her mother, Celia told Rappler’s Indonesia bureau.

  4. The NBI should further look into this. She might be telling the truth. This government could be sending its own citizen to the gallows without doing anything..

  5. This is another illustration of the burdens the poor in out midst have to endure.
Can we just close our eyes to what is happening to the poor and not do something to alleviate their burdens? God have mercy on us.

This is one of these things that cry to the heavens for mercy and vengeance to those responsible for the fate that awaits Mary Jane Veloso. The government should look for and identify this Christine and her cohorts and deal with them the just penalty for what they have done to Mary Jane.

  6. Filipino people should be marching in the street in their thousands protesting supporting your citizen ,this is outrageous the poor naive girl

What ever happened to benefit of doubt , the punishment does not fit the alleged crime

our Philippine media should propagate the awareness to the citizen “gratis” so that our poor countrymen being taken advantaged by our unscrupulous countrymen be pre-warned about this practice. the info campaign should be continuous and on all forms. by the way, our country should be reacting to this case the same way by putting drug producers and big fish dealers to DEATH.

I hope the Indonesia’s President he will pardon Mary Jane for the cause of her childrens. Mr. President, please, please have mercy on Mary Jane.

Under Philippine Laws, had the death penalty not discontinued by GMA, Mary Jane Veloso would surely be also found guilty too and meted the penalty of death

    • Nick Natividad on

Death penalty was only for the guilty person not for the innocent. Jane Veloso is not guilty!!!

In my mind, it is possible that Mary Jane knew that she is carrying the heroin in that bag. She was given a VIP treatment by Christine. She gave her a bag. These kindness should have been a signal that it is too good to be3 true. She accepted the $500.00 and free flight and hotel in Indonesia, and for what?

    • having known my poor countrymen and how many can become so gullible because of lack of education, experience, and sheer poverty, it is not far fetched that she is telling the truth. what is very painful is that the other woman Christine is getting away with it. In my mind she is the more guilty, the one who has taken advantage and exploited Mary Jane’s poverty. She’s the one who deserves death penalty.

Whatever happen to Christine and her brother and his associates? How come they were not arrested or pursue by the authorities. Is Christine ion the Philippines now.
Interpol should have been notified of this crime if she is in some other country.

  12. Reading aout this made me cry…I am so angry at the government for not doing more than they are saying…clearly, they always wait at the last minute…so heartless for the citizens..

    I am praying for a miracle…

If that was the same testimony she gave in court, then she should be acquitted or at least meted the life imprisonment penalty because the element of intent to possess is absent while the fraudulent mechanism of Christine and her brother was there. She was so naive and unsuspecting. These should had been appreciated as mitigating circumstances. I hope her penalty is commuted to life. Meanwhile we must advocate and instill consciousness that life is precious and that cruel and unusual punishment is inhuman. The commandment, ‘Thou shall not kill!’ is universal! Those who kill will certainly earn bad karma, whether individual or a state.
