Masbateños alarmed over post-election violence


MASBATE CITY: Residents of this island-province have expressed alarm over cases of post-election violence here.

On Monday, 36-year-old Janet C. Balgos, a public school teacher who was a member of the Board of Inspectors in the last elections assigned in Barangay Victory, was shot and wounded by an identified suspect in Barangay Sampad, Balud, Masbate, the Masbate Provincial Police Office (MPPO) said Friday.

The MPPO said Balgos was on board a Bajaj motorcycle en route to Barangay Poblacion from her residence in Barangay Victory at about 9 p.m., and upon reaching Barangay Sampad, an interior village that is about 12 kilometers from Balud town proper, the suspect shot her, hitting her right breast and thigh.

The suspect fled toward the hinterland, while the victim was brought to the Balud Municipal Hospital for immediate medical treatment.

On the following day, another shooting incident transpired in Barangay Dao at around 8:40 p.m.

The Balud Municipal Police Station said the victim, Allan Florez, 26, single, a fisherman and resident of the village, was shot by suspect Leonardo del Rosario.

The BMPS said Florez was having a drinking session at his neighbor’s house, and while he was urinating at the back of the house, del Rosario, armed with unknown caliber, approached him from behind and shot him, hitting his stomach.

The suspect fled on foot towards Barangay Ubo, Balud, bringing with him his firearm, while the victim was brought to the Balud Municipal Hospital for treatment.

In Cawayan town, a former barangay chairman was shot dead by men riding in tandem in Barangay Tubog on Wednesday morning.

The Cawayan Municipal Police Station identified the victim as Felipe Betache Jr., 57, a former village executive and a resident of this place.
