CAVITE: Hundreds of journalists from various media organizations in Cavite-Laguna-Batangas-Rizal-Quezon (Calabarzon) and National Capital Region staged a rally on Thursday in Imus City to denounce the murder of Remate tabloid reporter Rubylita Garcia.
Around 300 journalists carrying streamers and placards that read “Stop Media Killings!” and “Justice for Robelita Garcia!” attended a candle-lighting ceremony and prayed at the Lady of Pillar Cathedral before marching towards the provincial office of Cavite police where they had a dialogue with provincial director Senior Supt. Joselito Esquivel Jr.
Esquivel on Monday ordered the administrative relief of Tanza town police chief Supt. Conrado Villanueva whose name was mentioned by a witness to the shooting of Garcia, the president of the Confederation of Media Practitioners Organization (CAMPO).
Esquivel said 200 members of Cavite police force are now hunting down the suspects on Garcia’s murder.
Garcia, 52, was shot inside her house by two unidentified gun for hire killers who remain at large.
Garcia was the third journalist from Cavite to be murdered for the past years. The others were Dennis Ramos and Bert Borbon.
Meanwhile, Third District Rep. Alex Advincula visited Garcia’s family at La Bien Funeral Parlor in Barangay Maliksi in Bacoor City.
He condemned the killing of Garcia, an active member of Cavite media whom he had known for a long time. “Sana po mahuli na yung suspect na pumatay sa isang mamahayag na Kabitenyo [I hope that the suspect for the murder of a Cavite journalist will be caught soon].”
