CAYETANO TO JOIN MEETINGS AT SIDELINES OF ASEAN SUMMITS
EXECUTIVE Secretary Salvador Medialdea has been named caretaker of the government ahead of President Rodrigo Duterte’s trip to Laos for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Summits and a visit to Indonesia.
Palace Communications Secretary Martin Andanar made the announcement a day after saying the President’s trip to Brunei had been called because of the explosion in the Duterte’s home city of Davao that killed at least 14 people and injured dozens.
“The President will be flying to Laos tomorrow, and the caretaker officer while he is away is Executive Secretary [Salvador] ‘Bingbong’ Medialdea,” Andanar said over state-run radio station DZRB.
President Duterte is expected to meet with US President Barack Obama, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, among others, during his first Asean Summit as Philippine President.
Also on Sunday, presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella said Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano would be part of the Philippine delegation during bilateral and sideline meetings at the ASEAN Summits and related summits.
Cayetano will attend “in his capacity as the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee,” he said.
The lawmaker ran for vice president under Duterte’s ticket in the May elections but lost.
Duterte had said Cayetano would take over as Foreign secretary, replacing Perfecto Yasay Jr., when the one-year ban on the appointment of losing election candidates ends.
