BUHAY Partylist Rep. and Senior Deputy Minority Leader Lito Atienza assailed the sponsors of House Bill 6517 or the Medical Cannabis Bill for failing to produce studies to prove their claim that marijuana is medicinal. “All medical research and studies prove otherwise. Marijuana has no medicinal value and even poses serious dangers to its users. We are putting it on record that you [Isabela Rep. Rodolfo Albano 3rd] have not produced anything to back up your claims except mere testimonials, including your own, about having used it and benefiting from it,” Atienza said. He pointed out that local medical groups including the Philippine Medical Association and the Philippine College of Physicians Foundation, as well as Philip Chua, chairman of the Filipino United Network–USA, a group of Filipino physicians based in the United States, have rejected the proposed new legislation that seeks to authorize the prescription of medical marijuana for a variety of ailments. Experts have warned against the high risk of abuse because of the addictive effects of the illegal substance.
