DEFENDING champion Dioniver Medrano underscored his readiness to compete in the prestigious Larry King Invitational Chess Tournament in US as he topped the 2014 Social Security System (SSS) Inter-Color and Individual Seven Rounds Chess Tournament.
Medrano successfully retained his crown after silencing giant killer Ryan Quitana of in the final round of event held at the Function Room of SSS Main Building in East Avenue, Quezon City.
Medrano collected a total of 6.5 points to complete a back-to-back championship romp in the tournament sanctioned by National Chess Federation of the Philippines and was officiated by FIDE National Arbiters Jesus Bitantes and Florante Lopez.
“Close shave. This victory is sweeter the second time around,” said Medrano, who will be leaving for US next month.
Carl Espallardo grabbed second place honors with total six points. He crushed Rene Domaycos in the final round.
Quintana and former champion Alvin Olovida scored five points each to share the No. 3 spot. Alvin Olovida posted an upset win over tournament favorite Jun Costinar in the final round.
Quintana, however, grabbed the third place honors via superior tiebreak points.
