Megaworld Corporation and Puma teamed up with the Corporate Football Association of the Philippines to launch the inaugural Megaworld Cup that will be held on May 31 at the McKinley Hill Stadium in Taguig.
The event will also feature the Puma Head to Head campaign that aims to spread love for football in the Philippines.
The Megaworld Cup is composed of six teams from McKinley Hill and Eastwood City that will face off in a double round-robin, point-system format. These corporate teams are Bayer, Wells Fargo, FactSet, Talent 2, Thomson Reuters, and Enderun Colleges.
The games will be on May 31, June 7, and June 14.
Football national team head coach Thomas Dooley believes that this is a great step towards growth of football in the country.
“The biggest sport in the world and the biggest event in the world is Football. The best players in football are around 5’6” or 5’7” which is exactly what you’d find here,” said Dooley, stressing out the potential of Filipino athletes in football.
“Football is the future. It’s something that’s been growing over here,” he added.
The Head-to-Head campaign would showcase a match between members of the Philippine Azkals team Juani Guirado, Misagh Bahadoran, Manuel Ott, Martin Steuble, and Daisuke Sato going against the Filipino-foreign model group Juan Direction composed of Daniel Marsh, Charlie Sutcliffe, Brian Wilson, Matthew Edwards, and Henry Edwards.
“I think 80 percent of my life has been football, and I’m just really glad to be part of this Puma game and I’m excited for the challenge,” said Bahadoran during the press conference.
Megaworld aims to open the 2nd season of the Megaworld Cup later this year, with the event allowing companies or corporations outside of McKinley Hill and Eastwood city to participate in the tournament.
