FC Meralco Manila tries to return to the top spot when it battles a revamped Davao Aguilas FC in the Philippines Football League (PFL) today at the Davao del Norte Sports Complex in Tagum City.
Meralco Manila and Davao Aguilas meet head-on for the third time in the league’s inaugural season at 4 p.m.
Currently No. 2 with 24 points, the Sparks go for maximum markers to leapfrog the streaking Kaya FC-Makati, which is currently No. 1 with 26 points.
But the No. 7 Aguilas are eyeing for their first win with a bolstered lineup following their high-profile signings during the ongoing transfer window.
Davao recently acquired midfielder Matthew Hartmann and second-string goalkeeper Nick O’Donnell from Global Cebu FC, defender Jason De Jong from Ceres Negros FC and 6-foot-5 Australian striker Harrison Sawyer from Western Pride FC.
Meralco welcomes back Daniel Gadia and Ace Villanueva while Davao is expecting the return of its seven players including Dylan de Bruycker, Jordan Blair and Richard Talaroc, all who played for the men’s national football team in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-23 Championship 2018 Qualifiers.
The capital powerhouse blanked the Tagum-based club, 2-0, in their first meeting at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium even as the two settled for a 2-2 draw in their second encounter at the Davao del Norte pitch.
Meanwhile, the third “Visayas Clasico” pitting Ceres Negros and Global Cebu was rescheduled to give way to the former’s participation in this year’s AFC Cup.
The Yellow Busmen will tackle Home United FC in the first leg of the AFC Cup Asean Zonal finals at the Jalan Besar Stadium in Singapore on August 2.
