THE Meralco Bolts defeated San Miguel Beer 106-95 in overtime in the 40th Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Governor’s Cup elimination round at the Araneta Coliseum on Saturday.
Import Andre Emmett finished with 31 points on top of 11 rebounds and five assists to lead the Bolts to victory after suffering a 73-92 loss to Globalport on Tuesday. Emmet outperformed Beermen import Arizona Reid, who posted only 13 points and 8 rebounds.
After a 91-91 standoff at the end of the regular period, Emmett led a solid offense, scoring back-to-back baskets that started Meralco’s big run. The defeat was the Beermen’s second straight setback following a 78-83 loss to Kia Carnival on Wednesday.
“It’s a good bounce back win for us. We just want to get back on track again. I thought our locals played much better with Andre Emmett tonight. It’s a big win for us, since you need to win every game in the elims. I thought our defensive game was sound. The least you want is to go down 0-2,” said Meralco coach Norman Black.
The Beermen took control of the game briefly leading by as much as 11 points, 40-29, with still 6:29 remaining in the second period. But they could not sustain the momentum eventually allowing Meralco to pull off a 12-0 charge behind Gary David, Emmett and Reynel Hugnatan. The 6’5 Emmett scored six points in the rally that let Meralco grab the upper hand, 41-40.
The Beermen fired four triples in the next frame but the effort was not enough to close the gap, 72-68, going into the pivotal period. Cliff Hodge scored on a basket off an assist by Emmett to tie the game 91-91 forcing a five-minute extension.
