The Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) has placed all its emergency crew on full alert to provide 24-hour assistance during the New Year’s revelry.
According to Meralco, the move will ensure that it will be able to respond to any contingency especially during New Year’s Eve. It added that contingency measures are in place in case power facilities get affected by pyrotechnics and firecracker explosions.
“We would like to advise the public not to play with firecrackers and pyrotechnics near electric lines and transformers, as these may cause power interruptions and even result in accidents,” Meralco Public Information Office Head Joe Zaldarriaga said.
He said confetti, party poppers, and balloons can also cause electrical problems.
“So it would be best to use them in open spaces and far from our facilities,’’ Zaldarriaga added.
Although Meralco regularly upgrades and maintains its facilities to ensure that they are in tip-top condition, Zaldarriaga said overhead lines are still vulnerable to firecracker explosions and pyrotechnics.
In case of emergency, Meralco customers can call the company’s 24-hour Call Center at 16211.
“Our Call Center is ready to respond to customers’ needs at any given time,” Zaldarriaga said, adding that customers may also text their concerns to 0920-9716211 (Smart), 0925-7716211 (Sun), and 0917-5516211 (Globe). They may also get in touch with Meralco through its Facebook page (www.facebook.com/meralco) and Twitter account (@meralco).
