Power distributor Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) said the generation charge for this month is likely to go up due to higher prices at the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM).
However, it is hopeful that the generation charge hike will be offset by the reduction in distribution charge.
Meralco estimates that the generation charge will increase by 25 to 30 centavos per kilowatthour (kWh) this month.
The hike in WESM prices, Meralco said, is driven by the numerous instances of forced outages by other power plants that triggered a number of yellow alerts.
“The Malampaya gas restrictions during said supply month also resulted in the use of more expensive alternative fuel like condensate by some power plants, such as the First Gas plants,” the power firm said in a statement.
Meralco said that it is ready to implement a lower distribution charge this July upon receipt of the Order of the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) approving the application it had earlier filed.
The power firm will delay the schedule of its bill delivery for a number of days for some of its customers as it awaits the order of the ERC, which it hopes to receive on July 10.
