MERALCO Bolts crushed Globalport, 123-95, to complete its elimination round with a big bang on Saturday in the 39th Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Governor’s Cup at the Alonte Sports Arena in Biñan, Laguna.
Gary David finished with 33 points while import Mario West bid farewell with a triple-double performance and Reynel Hugnatan figured in a double-double to lead Meralco’s onslaught that saw them led by as much as 22 points twice (the last 106-84).
Meralco finished the short elimination round with a 3-6 card while Globalport Batang Pier settled at the bottom with a mere 1-8 win-loss slate. Their lone win was over Alaska Aces, 95-91, on May 23.
However, even if Meralco tie Barako Bull with similar card at the end of the elimination, the Energy Cola will still clinch the eight and last quarterfinals slot because of their 95-94 win over the Bolts in their lone meeting on May 18. Barako Bull with a 3-5 record will be facing Alaska today at the Araneta Coliseum.
“We just wanted to finish on a high note. It’s been a frustrating season for us, but at least in the last six games we were three-of-three. But it was not enough for us to make it to the next level. We’re going to take a rest and see what happens in the coming season,” said Meralco coach Ryan Gregorio.
Meanwhile, the quest for the four twice-to-beat advantage continue today as solo leader Talk ‘N Text takes on Ginebra Kings while Alaska and Barako Bull face each other at the Araneta Coliseum. Talk ‘N Text face Ginebra at 5:15 p.m. following the 3 p.m. encounter between the Aces and Barako Bull.
