MGB: mining firms lack security


TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan: Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Regional Director Mario Ancheta said government contracted mining firms in Cagayan Valley may have insufficient number of security personnel that often exposed them to attacks. He voiced his concern after the burning of multimillion worth of property of Nickel Asia Company (NAC). Maj. Gen. Lysander Suerte Philippine Army’s 5th Infantry Division (5ID) commander, said over 30 suspected New People’s Army rebels torched six service vehicles, four backhoes, a bulldozer and a payloader owned by NAC in Isabela town for refusal of their owner to pay “revolutionary” taxes. Three large-scale mining companies in Cagayan Valley extract gold, copper and nickel in the region.
