Government lawyers are blocking Jose Miguel Arroyo’s request for the Sandiganbayan’s Fourth Division to allow him to travel abroad. Arroyo is the husband of former President and now congresswoman Gloria Arroyo. Facing graft charges, he filed a motion last August 20 asking the anti-graft court’s permission to travel to Germany, Italy and Hong Kong from September 21 to October 10 for leisure and medical purposes, as well as to Japan and Hong Kong from October 25 to November 2 for leisure. In their comment/opposition to Arroyo’s pleading, prosecutors described his reasons “self-serving” without documents to prove the same. “If indeed he really intends to go to these places, he would have reserved tickets for such journeys and he would have made hotel reservations for this purpose. Besides accused-movant [Arroyo]’s purported visit to foreign lands is not meritorious enough for the court to put an imprimatur on such travels,” they said.
