Lawmakers belonging to the so-called Makabayan or progressive bloc in the House of Representatives on Monday attempted to steal the thunder from President Benigno Aquino 3rd as they stormed past security and unfurled protest signs just as he ended his State of the Nation Address (SONA).
The congressmen booed as they flashed placards that read “Serbisyo palpak” (rotten service), “pork barrel king,” “mapang-aping haciendero [oppressive landlord]” and “manhid” [insensitive].
The President was about to descend the platform when the congressmen did their thing.
The incident prompted Aquino’s allies inside the plenary hall to cheer even louder to drown out the militant lawmakers’ boos.
Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. said the boos were actually meant for the Makabayan lawmakers, not for the President.
Gabriela party-list Rep. Emmie de Jesus said they resorted to doing a “lightning rally” inside the plenary as a “tit-for-tat” on the President’s SONA.
“Para sa akin, kanina pa masikip ang dibdib ko dun sa pinagsasabi niya. Nare-reduce yung mga katotohanan sa mga data na gawa-gawa [For me, I’m suffering from chest pain because of his statements. The truth is reduced by false data],” de Jesus told The Manila Times.
