• Military receives 77 APCs from US

THE first batch of 77 M113 armored personnel carriers (APCs) donated by the US government to improve the capability of the Philippine military arrived on Thursday in Subic.

Col. Restituto Padilla, spokesperson of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, said 37 more APCs will be arriving on December 14.

Padilla said the Philippines got the military equipment for free under the Excess Defense Article (EDA) Program.

“It’s a most welcome development particularly for the army as it energizes and strengthen its mechanized division,” he added.

The Air Force recently received two FA-50 fighter jets to replace the F-5 jet fighters, which were retired in 2004.

The Department of National Defense (DND) sealed the jet acquisition contract with Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) last year at a cost of P18.9 billion.

Also this year, the Navy accepted two landing craft heavy (LCH) which were recently decommissioned and donated to the Philippines by Australia.
