A MILITIAMAN was killed and another wounded as about 40 members of the New People’s Army (NPA) harassed a Citizen Armed Force Geographical Unit (Cafgu) detachment in Sibagat town, Agusan del Sur province early Friday morning.
In a radio interview, Maj. Leo Bongosia, spokesperson of the 4th Infantry “Diamond” Division, identified the slain Cafgu member as Elan Vincolado. He also identified the wounded militiaman as Edwin Cempron, who is now out of danger.
Bongosia said the NPAs harassed the Army Patrol base of the 26th Infantry Battalion in Barangay Banagbanag, Sibagat town at about 5 a.m. on Friday. The patrol base manned by three regular members of the Philippine Army and 35 Cafgu members were attacked by a composite force of the Communist Front Committee 21, Front Committee 80 and Sentro de Gravidad (SDG).
Bongosia said the army received earlier intelligence information regarding the impending attack and put in place the necessary preparations. The ensuing firefight went on for five hours before the enemy fled.
Some residents in the area reported of six dead bodies accordingly brought along by the fleeing rebels. However, military sources could not confirm the report in the absence of body count.
The military conducted clearing and pursuit operations against the rebels. PNA
