For going beyond one-million subscribers on YouTube, ABS-CBN’s recording company Star Music received the Gold Play Button Award from the video-sharing website this December.
Now officially the first music label to achieve the feat on YouTube, Star Music hit the golden million in late July, but had to submit to a long verification process before they got a hold of the coveted frame, bearing a literal gold-plated play button.
Current figures show that Star Magic’s YouTube channel already has 1.13-million subscribers to date, coming not just from the Philippines but also the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, USA, Canada, Kuwait and other countries around the world.
“One million subscribers in Youtube is a very important milestone, especially since there are only three awards given by Youtube—100,00 subscribers, 1,000,000 subscribers and 10,000,000 subscribers,” said Star Songs and New Media head, lawyer Marivic Benedicto, at the official announcement on December 8.
“We’re also proud to say that Star Music is the very first recording company that achieved this [feat]here in the Philippines. Within ABS-CBN, we are the third, the first being ABS-CBN.com and the second ABS-CBN News. Moreover, we are currently the sixth top YouTube channel in the Philippines,” she added.
Although YouTube can be accessed for free by users, the site earns revenues through advertising, which the website shares with producers, record companies, and composers.
Currently, the revenue share of Star Music is about a dollar for every 1,000 views or five centavos per view, which is shared among the artist in the form of royalties.
The most viewed OPM video on the Star Music channel is “Ikaw,” composed and performed by Yeng Constantino. The official music video, which features actual footage from her wedding to Yam Asuncion, has garnered more than 50-million views so far, with an additional 20-million views from lyric videos and uploads by fans.
Meanwhile, KZ’s music video for “Mahal Ko o Mahal Ako,” the Himig Handog P-Pop Love Songs grand prize winner, is the second most viewed Star Music video with more than 35-million views.
“These days, we are now in the digital era. Even my latest album All About Love became platinum because of online buyers, but the physical CD went into a different direction. It’s the same as in YouTube where people can measure real time what the viewers or the listeners want,” Constantino related of her experience as a recording artist in the digital age. It will be remembered that the popular singer started her career in 2006 when she won Pinoy Dream Academy Season 1.
To mark this major milestone, Star Music brought together a musical powerhouse of more than 30 of its most popular artists to record a new version of Constantino’s 2007 hit “Salamat.” The cover debuted on December 9 on MOR 101.9, Myx, OneMusic.PH, Spotify, and iTunes.
Among the artists featured in the single are Janella Salvador, Ylona Garcia, Bailey May, Angeline Quinto, Erik Santos, Kaye Cal, Marion Aunor, Daryl Ong, Bugoy Drilon, Liezel Garcia, Jovit Baldivino, Sue Ramirez, Inigo Pascual, Michael Pangilinan, Jed Madela, Morissette Amon, Klarisse De Guzman, Jamie Rivera, Jolina Magdangal-Escueta, Juris, Vina Morales, Jona, Migz & Maya, Gloc 9, KZ, Piolo Pascual, Kim Chiu, Xian Lim, Enchong Dee, Tim Pavino, Alex Gonzaga, Enrique Gil, Kathryn Bernardo, Daniel Padilla, and Vice Ganda.
Happy with the new version, Constantino, who also wrote the lyrics and composed the music for “Salamat” said, “My song has been given new life. This is my way of thanking all of my fans who have supported me for the past 10 years, as well as all of the fans of Star Music.”
Adding she is both flattered and grateful the company chose her single for the milestone, Constantino shared, “Whenever my songs are used to mark events or occasions, it’s magical for me, because I always remember how I started as a songwriter. So thank you to Star Magic, and thank you to everyone who continue to support me.”
