‘Mindanao not a dumping ground of rogue policemen’

DON’T make Mindanao a dumping ground of rogue policemen.

Zamboanga City Rep. Celso Lobregat on Wednesday made the statement as a reaction to Philippine National Police Director General Ronaldo dela Rosa’s pronouncement that policemen involved in drugs and other illegal activities would be transferred to Mindanao.

“General, we don’t need police scalawags in Zamboanga, we need good policemen,” Lobregat said during the weekly media forum Kapihan sa Manila Bay held at Café Adriatico in Ermita, Manila.

Lobregat added that he made a similar call to dela Rosa earlier during a recent budget hearing at the House of Representatives.

The lawmaker said the move would not solve the PNP’s problem with police scalawags, suggesting that it would be better if erring men in uniform are suspended instead.

“You’re just transferring the problem [by dumping them in Zamboanga]. If something is being done on other people who are involved in drugs, why just transfer [rogue]policemen? They should be placed on floating status,” Lobregat pointed out.

According to the congressman, the PNP chief has promised to “seriously consider” his proposal.

In the same forum, National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) chief Oscar Albayalde explained that it is within the authority of the PNP chief to transfer a policeman or officer and that it is a normal process and part of preemptive measures.
