Miner buried alive in Benguet mine site

Itogon, Benguet: Another small scale mine accident claimed the life of a miner three days after three miners choked to death inside a tunnel here on Thursday. Narciso Pigas Segundo, 50, from Bet-wag, Ampucao, Itogon, was dug up from the rubble after he was buried alive while working inside a 15-foot deep tunnel at Manganese, Ampucao. Authorities said soft underground soil caved in on him on Thursday morning; he was retrieved at about 4 p.m. Also last Monday, Rosalino Api-it Narciza, 54; Santiago Falikao Banganan, 32 and Barry Rimando Api-it, 36, all residents of Ucab village, were retrieved dead from a mine portal at Fatima. Reports said that Narciza entered the portal to retrieve mining equipment but his colleagues never saw him come out, prompting his nephew Api-it and Banganan to check on him; the 2 did not come out alive. Mayor Victorio Palangdan has called on small-scale miners, mostly without breathing apparatuses, to exercise extra care in their work.
