Mining firm cited for climate program

BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya: A non-government organization complementing the government in conserving the Philippine environment has recognized a foreign-based mining firm in the province for its “outstanding” environmental programs against the challenges posed by climate change.

Pollution Control Association of the Philippines, Inc. (PCAPI) in collaboration with the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has recognized OceanaGold’s environmental programs during their recent 35th National Annual Convention and General Assembly.

Committed to be an active partner in institutionalizing environmental conservation, continual improvement and compliance to regulations, PCAPI was formed in June 1980 through the initiative of retired Gen. Guillermo Pecache, the Commissioner of the National Pollution Commission.

Pecache stated that PCAPI was organized to work hand in hand with the government in the protection of the environment, prevention, abatement and control of land, air and water pollution.

With the theme “Enhancing Resource Sustainability for Economic and Ecological Survival” during the convention, PCAPI stated: “We are focusing in creating strategies for achieving sustainable development against the threat of climate change and our country’s various economic, social and environmental problem.”

Also during their recent annual assembly, companies from all over the country participated in showcasing their environmental management commitments, which propel their compliance and good environmental performance over the years.

PCAPI officials said that among those that presented their environmental programs, OceanaGold’s establishment of water treatment plant in Didipio Mine in Kasibu town bestowed 1st Runner-Up in the Best Environment Success Story Category.

OceanaGold Senior Vice-President for Communications and External Affairs Chito Gozar said the company strives to exceed industry benchmarks through the implementation of innovative environmental programs.

“OceanaGold seeks to not only meet, but consistently exceed regulatory requirements in place to protect the environment for future generations and safeguard the sustainability of nearby communities,” Gozar said.

Most of all, Gozar said the company provides direction to its employees and contractors undertaking environmental activities and that its employees are the forefront of environmental identification and mitigation within OceanaGold.
