She’s feisty, always loquacious, oftentimes abrasive. But according to social media, she is the most popular senator and stands a good chance in the 2016 presidential derby if she decides to join the fray.
Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago is the “favorite” senator of netizens. She has 1.4 million fans on Facebook and 649,000 followers on Twitter, qualifying her to be christened “social media superstar.”
A survey of an online newspaper also showed that among the possible female presidential candidates, Santiago was ranked number 1, getting 83 percent of the votes. Sen. Grace Poe, who topped the senatorial elections in 2013, garnered a mere 8 percent.
On Facebook, Santiago is the runaway favorite. As of Saturday, she had 1.4 million “Likes”.
The senator proved her “superstar” power on Friday, March 22 when she acknowledged a prolonged, noisy ovation from some 2,000 people at the graduation ceremonies of the Rogationist College in Silang, Cavite province.
Santiago’s post on Friday was liked by 53,000 netizens. “The purpose of a teacher is to teach, not to teach to flunk a class,” she said. Most of her fans are students.
Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero trails Santiago, with 463,699 fans. He is followed by senators Alan Cayetano, who has 382,480 fans; Loren Legarda, 249,552; Juan Ponce Enrile, 199,424; Grace Poe, 154,092; Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel 3rd, 135,019; JV Ejercito,117,067; Pia Cayetano, 92,488 fans; Cynthia Villar, 92,122;Bongbong Marcos,84,865;TG Guingona, 8,464; Gregorio Honasan, 8,381; and Nancy Binay,7,886.
Senators Franklin Drilon, Ralph Recto, Sergio Osmeña, Bam Aquino and Sonny Angara do not have an official fan page but had personal Facebook pages.
Senators Jose “Jinggoy” Estrada, Lito Lapid, Ramon “Bong” Revilla and Tito Sotto do not have official or personal Facebook accounts.
Among senators, Santiago also has the highest number of followers on Twitter at 649,000. She is followed by Escudero, who has 176,118 followers,Marcos with 82,918; Legarda, 39,841; Angara, 36,914; Ejercito, 26,728; Enrile, 25,972 and Guingona, 24,096.
